Every Interview Is a Risk Assessment. Most Hiring Processes Don’t Know That

Every interview question, every reference call, every scenario exercise is a risk assessment dressed up as a conversation.

The candidates who understand this show up differently. They don’t lead with accomplishments. They lead with judgment — how they think, what tradeoffs they made, what they’d do differently.

The ones who don’t understand it spend the entire process marketing themselves to an audience that isn’t buying marketing.

What boards are actually testing for is portability.

Can this person create outcomes in this context, with these constraints, at this moment in the organization’s life? That’s the question underneath every question.

Here’s the uncomfortable mirror for hiring organizations: if your process can’t distinguish between impressive and portable, you’re not running a risk assessment. You’re running a beauty contest.

And beauty contests consistently produce leaders who look right in the interview and struggle in the role.

The most important question in any executive search isn’t “who is the best candidate?”

It’s “what does this organization actually need — and how do we test for that?”

If your board can’t answer that before the search starts, the search is already behind.
